Charity car show to take place this weekend in memory of Glebe man

A CHARITY car show is taking place this weekend in memory of a young father who tragically lost his life in a road traffic collision almost a year ago.

Stephen McElwee, from Garvan Park, Glebe, Sion Mills, was just 30-years-old when he died following a two-vehicle collision near his home on November 2, 2017.

The father-of-two was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital and cared for in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he passed away.

Sorely missed by those closest to him, he was known for his love of cars and car shows. In a bid to raise money for the unit and to keep the ‘amazing’ young man’s memory alive, his family and friends have organised the inaugural ‘Stephen McElwee Memorial Meet and Raffle’.

Speaking ahead of the event, a family spokesperson said: “The event is based on Stephen’s love for cars and to raise funds for the Intensive Care Unit in Altnagelvin for the care they gave not only to Stephen following the accident but the support they also gave us his family.

“We are forever indebted to them. Every penny we raise is going directly to the charity the support from local businesses in the area has been overwhelming.”

The event is taking place at Joe Soap’s Carwash in Clady on Sunday from 2pm until 5pm.

Entry for the ‘Show and Shine’ is £5 per car. All cars must be pre-registered and via Facebook or email (PayPal). A trophy will be presented to the ‘Best Car’ on the day. Admission for spectators is free but donations can be made on the day.

There will also be refreshments available including a chip van with a special guest appearance from ‘The A Team’, ‘The Irish Bandit’, other speciality cars as well as Strabane’s own, Pat Gillespie.

Likewise, all proceeds from the raffle will go towards the ICU with the draw to be made on November 24, with some phenomenal prizes up for grabs provided by a number of local businesses. Tickets are now on sale.

Among the prizes are a luxury overnight stay in the five star Kilronan Castle, Co Rosscommon, 200 litres of home heating oil from 1st Stop Shop, Clady, a £100 voucher for Motorparts, Derry Road Strabane, 60 litres Kerosene from Border Service Station Ltd.., Strabane, Rasul Chamber for two at the Wellbeing Health & Beauty Spa, a meal for two for The Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town – and many, many more amazing prizes.

“Tickets can be bought and paid for via PayPal, by private messaging the Facebook page for details or from one of the local ticket sellers. Tickets are only £2 per ticket or three tickets are £5,” the spokesperson added.

The McElwee family would like to thank all locally businesses and persons who are supporting the event.
