A MOURNE man is throwing down the gauntlet to anyone who would like to try his 50 mountain challenge.

Named after his beloved labrador, Cassie’s Challenge is a mammoth effort to climb 50 mountains in the Mournes and to do it within 24 hours. It is a 58-mile run ascending a total of 6193 metres.

Harry Teggarty has completed the challenge twice and has created a colourful book on the Mournes and the feat.

“Cassie was our black labrador and she ran about the mountains with us all the time,” said Harry.

“I made this challenge up to have something in the Mournes and I thought it would be a good challenge for people to do.”

The 67-year-old first completed it on 18 June 2005 in a time of 23:12 and last year on 24 June he did it again, shaving some time off his original time, completing it in 21:43.

Proving that age is just a number, Harry said that to date he is the only person to have completed Cassie’s Challenge.

“I am the only one who has done the challenge so far, but I would encourage people to do it, but I don’t know how many would want to do it in the 24 hours!” he said.

“You can also do seven different walks in seven days, which is another way to do the challenge.

“The book is an illustrated guide to the challenge itself, with lots of photos and advice on how to be careful in the mountains.”

Harry is now in his ninth year as a member of the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) and all proceeds from the sale of the book will go directly to the team.

“We are very busy at the moment, especially at the weekends. It’s a good thing to be able to help people. We want to do the best for people and there is a great team bond on MMRT.

“We had talked about doing a book back in 2005, but we never got the time to do it,” he said.

“Then when we started talking about a new base for MMRT and needing to do some fundraising, I thought it would be good to do the book for that.

“We had the skeleton of the book done in 2005 with some photos from the challenge then, so we had to get some new photos to go in the book now.

“I tried to keep it as simple as I could so that people can understand it all. It’s about how to get to the mountains and how to keep safe.”

The book, which was published by Sean McCrystal S Design, costs £10 and is about 100 pages long. Harry said he hopes people will “enjoy reading it”.

“It’s about all the different walks in the mountains with some great photographs showing how nice it is,” he said.

“The book is about encouraging people to come out and see what’s on their doorstep and to be safe there as well.”
