Win secures Division One title for Eoghan Rua thumbnail

EOGHAN Rua claimed their first ever Division One football title on the final day of the league season with a comfortable 1-18 to 1-6 home win over Dungiven.
They pipped Slaughtneil to the post by a single point having won thirteen of their fifteen league games, with the Emmetts also losing two games. Crucially, though, Slaughtneil also dropped a point in their draw with Kilrea earlier in the season.
The Coleriane men have been consistent all season long, their only defeats being away to Ballinderry and Loup, and they produced another strong performance last Sunday to close the deal with a commanding win over Dungiven.
In truth, Eoghan Rua were well on their way to victory and the title before the end of the first half as they they built up a commanding 1-9 to 0-1 lead by the twenty third minute. Dungiven got a sloppy goal two minutes later but the home side still went into the break 1-12 to 1-3 to the good.
The second half was all about controlling matters and ensuring there would be no way back for Dungiven. With Niall Holly commanding the full back position, ably assisted by Liam McGoldrick at centre back along with Barry Daly, Ciaran Lagan, Ciaran Lenehan and Ciaran Mullan carrying ball out time after time, Dungiven never really got a sniff of a goal that might have given them something to cling to.
