Derry pull away from Armagh in second half thumbnailA proud moment for these two Derry players as they celebrate winning the Nicky Rackard Cup after defeating Armagh in the final.

Derry...................3-23 Armagh...............2-15

SOME 11 years after Swatragh's Mickey Conway captained Derry to an emphatic 5-15 to 1-11 Nicky Rackard Cup final victory over Donegal, Banagher's Oisin McCloskey skippered the Oak Leaf County to an equally emphatic 3-23 to 2-12 win over Armagh at the weekend. In the early exchanges, Armagh tried to lay down a marker but referee Shane Hynes of Galway flashed yellow cards to Nathan Curry and Dylan McKenna inside three minutes and that put an end to the nonsense, the outstanding Alan Grant netting in the 7th minute to give the title favourites a settling major.
Still the Orchard County had their best spell of the match in the next ten minutes and it took all the experience of the rock solid Liam Óg Hinphey, ably assisted by Sean Cassidy and Darragh McCloskey, to restrict them to four unanswered points from Nathan Curry, Eoin McGuinness and David Carvill from a free by the 16th minute.
Gerald Bradley took a pass from his club mate Mehaul McGrath and levelled a minute later and from that point to the final whistle, Derry got into their rhythm and reeled off points to lead 1-09 to 0-06 at the interval.
David Carvill missed a 30 metre free in front of the posts at 0-04 to 1-01 and that let off triggered a scoring surge that saw Alan Grant convert two frees in a 0-03 haul, adding another placed ball in the 30th minute after Gerald Bradley and David Carvill, from a free, had traded points.
In the 32nd minute, Liam Óg Hinphey, who was Derry's best player in the first half, was fouled and Alan Grant pointed the free to bring his tally to 1-04.
Wondrous point
By the short whistle, Derry added three more points, a wondrous point by Brian Cassidy quickly followed by another excellent score by the Slaughtneil player as Derry took a 1-09 to 0-06 lead to the break.
