AFTER 14 qualifying rounds for the National Hot Rod World Championship final in July, it all came down to one single point with Shane Murray edging out Jaimie McCurdy, John Christie and Keith Martin (who all tied for second place) for the title NI Points champion at Ballymena Raceway on Friday night.
No one in the stock car racing world would have believed it possible when this year's qualifying campaign started last July that nine drivers would go into the evening's final all mathematically capable of taking the coveted points crown. But so it was on Friday night and the tension was very noticeable as the cars assembled for the programme of races all knowing that it really was wide open for the title.
The tension in the pits might have been noticeable but the excitement in the stands was equally as noticeable as the vocal supporters cheered on their favourite drivers in an excellent night's racing bringing to a fitting climax an extraordinary series of racing.
John Christie had held a slender 9 point advantage at the top of the table going into the meeting with McCurdy 2nd, Adam Maxwell 3rd and Shane Murray 4th. After the first heat, the lead held by Christie was narrowed to only seven points as Jaimie McCurdy scored with a 5th place finish whilst Christie finished 10th and Shane Murray finished 11th. That race win went the way of Ian McReynolds who was in a battle to finish 10th in the points.
