IT wasn't pretty, and at times it looked as if United were going to drop more points to the battling Swifts, but ultimately class - and a refusal to be bullied - saw a comfortable win.
The mid-week win gave the Roesiders and an eight point lead over Newry City, who have a game in hand, the second game against the Swifts in a matter of days.
The champions had to dig deep, and were grateful to talisman Robbie Hume for a brace, and manager Paul Owens with a thunderbolt, for a 3-1 win, in what is the first game in a double header with Swifts.
United could not have asked for a better start, going ahead inside two minutes as that man Hume pounced on Murray's ball into the box and fired a crisp shot into the bottom corner.
The home team pushed for a second, and nearly got it five minutes later when Owens saw his free kick beat the wall but was blocked by Magill as it was creeping in at the base of the post.
Hume should have scored again on eight minutes, collecting the ball after McCready's run and cross, but he shot straight at the keeper.
After that bright start, it seemed as if United had run out of ideas, as they gradually lost their attacking edge and the game became an arid physical encounter.
Swifts were battling for their lives, and deservedly equalised in the twentieth minute. A corner from the right hold have been cleared but Largey took advantage of poor defending to force the ball in.
It could have been even worse for United three minutes later, as an identical corner was going in until McKeever's goal line clearance.
