ON Saturday January 28, Athletics Northern Ireland hosted the annual NI and Ulster Intermediate and Masters Cross Country Championship in the grounds of Gransha Park in Londonderry, with hundreds of athletes making the trip to the city for this prestigious event.
The programme of events had five races with a Masters Ladies and an Intermediate Ladies over 4k, a V65 Masters Men's, also over 4k, a Masters Men's race over 8k and the Intermediate Men's Race of 10k.
The favourable weather provided excellent running conditions and it was the Masters Ladies and V65 Men were first up for their 4k event. It was Amy Bulman (Willowfield Harriers), who has been a podium regular throughout the cross-country season who took first place in a time of 14.30 despite being closely challenged throughout the race by Fionnuala Diver (Letterkenny AC) who finished second only one second later in 14.31. Cathy McCourt (Unattached) completed the podium places in 14.35.
In the team event it was North Belfast Harriers in first place with Ballydrain Harriers second and Letterkenny AC third. In the V65 Men's race Jim Patterson (Newcastle AC) was comfortably winner in 16.12.
The Masters Men's race was closely contested in the early stages between Chris McGuinness (Foyle Valley AC), Stephen Duncan (Omagh Harriers), Declan Reed (City of Derry AC), Alan O'Hara (North Belfast Harriers) and Neill Weir (Willowfield Harriers) before Chris McGuinness, Declan Reed and Stephen Duncan broke away to contest the podium places. At the tape it was Chris who took first place in 24.57 from Declan, second in 25.06 and Stephen third in 25.14. In the team event it was North Belfast Harriers who again took first place, with Willowfield Harriers second and Foyle Valley AC third.
