AFTER Friday night's impressive win over highly fancied Newry City, there is a growing sense of belief that Limavady United may yet prove more difficult to dislodge from their title defence than the pundits had predicted. Certainly their performance against the best side to visit the Showgrounds this season, showed that they can hold their own against any side in the division. And while not yet quite reaching the heights of last season's white hot striker Cathair Friel, an appreciative spectator at the game, in 17 goal Robbie Hume the Roesiders have a striker capable of unlocking any defence.
Newry started the game brightly, and for twenty minutes were the better side. However, their only chance was an eleventh minute Walker shot over the bar. Although stretched at times, United held firm, with Watt in particular plugging the gaps as and when they appeared.
United finally carved out an opening after 29 minutes, thanks to a typically deft McFadden touch finding Murray who whipped over a cross for Hume, whose snap shot was parried by Murphy. Two minutes later, McFadden played in Hume, but he shot wide of the post. And the last chance of an intensely competitive half, which saw both sides largely cancel each other out, also fell to Hume, who latched on to a long ball on 43 minutes but hit the ball straight at Murphy.
