LIMAVADY United had another successful outing against League of Ireland opposition on Tuesday when they overcame First Division Finn Harps through Lee Patrick's early goal. The game was Harps' first competitive fixture and they gave a debut to Adam Clarke who had left the Roesiders only two weeks previously. United started brightly and the opening goal arrived when Friel's cross was met by Patrick lurking on the edge of the box and he had the simple task of side footing the ball home from close range.
Harps were naturally rusty and took their time to settle, with their first chance not coming until 21 minutes when Bonnar shot wide. There was no shortage of effort on show but defences were on top and there were no more openings in the first half. United's only real chances were a couple of trademark long range free kicks, neither of which was on target.
The second-half was disrupted by multiple substitutions Harps came into the game more and created several good scoring opportunities but the final shot was always wildly off target. The best chance of the half fell to Harps on 51 minutes after a flowing move down the right resulted in a goal bound shot that was deflected for a corner.
A welcome bonus for United was the cameo appearance by long term absentee Trevor Hutchinson, who showed he had lost none of his enthusiasm in the 20 minutes he was on the pitch.
He buzzed around the opposition goal mouth without getting on the end of a clear cut chance. So United gained their first win over Harps at the fourth attempt.
