LIMAVADY United defeated a youthful Derry City team at the Showgrounds on Wednesday night through a goal in each half. Although the visitors team was comprised mostly of players from its under 19 squad there was no shortage of skill on show in an entertaining contest.
The opening goal came just before half-time when Cathair Friel whipped over a perfect cross for the unmarked James McLaughlin to power home a header from ten yards out.
City equalised just before the hour with a goal that was almost identical when United's defence was caught standing off and McCormick was left exposed.
Kevin Roddy had a great chance to restore the lead five minutes later when he turned in the box and unleashed a fearsome volley that cannoned off the crossbar but although the rebound fell to a Limavady attacker the ball was put wide.
The winner came from an unexpected source as substitute Lee Harkin roaming forward from right back unleashed a shot in the 72nd minute from fully thirty yards that dipped under the bar as the visiting keeper stood rooted to the spot.
Ruairi McClean then had an effort that clipped the post.
The game petered out with a multitude of substitutions.
The two debutants James McLaughlin and Daibhid McIvor both showed impressive touches and suggested they will prove useful acquisitions.
