AN investigation is underway into the tragic death of a woman in a house fire in Grange Park, Limavady, on Monday morning (July 17). It is believed the woman was in her 50's, and is named locally as Helga McAteer, was originally from Eglinton and moved to the area ten years ago.
Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said a passer-by noticed smoke coming from the property at around 6.30am and alerted the emergency services.
The cause of the fatal fire is currently being investigated by police and NIFRS, which needed three fire appliances from Limavady, Crescent Link and Dungiven fire stations to tackle the blaze.
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Joan Baird, extended her sympathy to the family of Ms McAteer. She said: "Very sorry to hear such a tragedy in our Borough.
“My deepest sympathy to the lady's family, such a tragic event is difficult to understand."
DUP Causeway Coast and Glens Alderman Alan Robinson said: "Limavady is a close knit community where there are close family and friend connections right across the community spectrum therefore local people are understandably shocked and saddened at this very tragic loss of life.
“We all extend our deepest sympathies to this lady's family circle."
