Ferry service to set sail thumbnailThe Magilligan to Greencastle ferry looks set to be up and running within weeks.

THE GREENCASTLE to Magilligan Ferry looks set to be up and running within weeks after Causeway Coast and Glens councillors have recommended that the council slipway at Magilligan be leased to the new operator. Councillors from across the parties at last week's Environmental Services meeting welcomed the news that Donegal County Council was in negotiations with a new operator who hoped to be running by July 1.
In December 2016 Rooskey Frazer &Co Ltd had given notice discontinuing the service.
Back in March CC&G had refused to investigate the merits of giving a subvention (or grant) to any new operator, a decision called in by Sinn Fein and the SDLP.
Officers brought a recommendation to last week's meeting that permission be approved to allow the new ferry operator to use the council slipway at Magilligan and associated infrastructure.
Councillors heard that Donegal County Council had investigated a subvention and had re-tendered the service on this basis, with negotiations still ongoing between that council and an operator, with a view towards getting the ferry running by July 1.
