Derry finish strong to see off Roscommon
Thursday, 16 March 2017
DERRY scored 1-2 in the opening three minutes and 2-2 in the last seven to see off a stiff challenge from bottom of the table Roscommon at Celtic Park. Spells of lashing rain and a pitch sticky in places made it difficult enough for fluent hurling. In between the Derry early and late scoring bursts, Roscommon gave as good as they got and will look back with regret on a number of missed frees.
Derry now move on to a safe four points along with Down. Both Mayo and Roscommon are pointless below them but Roscommon have a game in hand.
Apart from their late scoring burst, the astute substitutions made by the management in the second half had a big bearing on the final outcome. The substitutes contributed 1-3, between them.
Derry's superior fitness was also a factor - Roscommon burned themselves out with their own efforts and were virtually at a standstill in the final ten minutes when Derry ran through their defence at will.
Prior to that, the Roscommon back line had been very good. They made life difficult for the Derry attack who often created their own problems with poor passing and a tendency to over play the ball.
