John Dallat in shock return thumbnailJohn Dallat pictured with Gerry Mullan following his election to the Northern Ireland Assembly in May 2016.

FORMER SDLP MLA John Dallat is to make a surprise return to politics after it was announced that he would be the party's sole candidate for the East Londonderry constituency in the forthcoming March 2 elections. The former deputy Speaker of the Assembly and deputy Chair of the Public Accounts Committee is bidding to make a return to front line politics after "successive scandals at the heart of the Executive have shattered public confidence in politics."
Mr Dallat was selected ahead of current MLA for the area, Gerry Mullan and party colleague Roisin Loftus.
The move to bring back the party stalwart has come as a shock to many.
Whilst unavailable for comment at the time of going to press, it has been reported that Mr Mullan was "bitterly disappointed" by the decision and was understood to be 'seeking legal advice'.
Speaking after his selection, Mr Dallat said: "After a lifetime of public service, I left politics with a heart full of hope for what could be achieved through mutual respect, partnership and accommodation.
“Like the rest of the public, I have been disgusted by what I've seen happen to our political institutions.
