‘Mindless and sick vandalism’
Thursday, 20 November 2008
On Sunday Alderman George Robinson, Deputy Mayor of Limavady spent a long time visiting residents in the Glens area of the town who were victims of crime after they awoke to find that tyres on their vehicles had been slashed overnight.
'MINDLESS' vandals went on a tyre slashing spree in Limavady at the weekend.
A total of 19 cars tyres slashed in the Coolessan Walk / Woodland Walk / Glens area over night on Saturday (November 15).
Limavady's Deputy Mayor, Alderman George Robinson was out with those affected on Sunday morning and described the incident as: "Nothing but mindless and wanton vandalism which I unreservedly condemn".
He said: "These vehicles have been damaged by thugs slashing tyres; some belonging to people who depend on them for their mobility or getting to and from their work, to me the reasoning behind such behaviour is beyond rational thinking if any reason exists at all.
“I was particularly annoyed as the victims of these mindless acts of destruction have been left facing bills - some into hundreds of pounds - at a time when they are trying to keep there heads above the financial water. It is also annoying as money that the victims had put aside for Christmas will have to be used to put right the damage caused.
“No-one can say these were sectarian attacks as the victims are from across the community spectrum. However, it does not matter whether the victims are from any particular part of our society, it is the fact they are the victims of this mindless thuggery that is important", said the Deputy Mayor.
"Any one who knows who carried out this destructive spree I would urge to give that information to the PSNI", he concluded.
Sinn Féin MLA Francie Brolly has also condemned the attacks.
Mr. Brolly said: "A number of cars were attackedin the early hours of Sunday morning in the Colessan and Woodland Walk area of Limavady. Nearly twenty cars had their tyres slashed as well as other damage. Many of these cars belonged to elderly members of the community. It is believed that three individuals engaged in this systematic vandalism.
“This is the same area in which homes and oil tanks were the object of arson attacks earlier in the year and people are living in constant fear of anti-community attacks. This is totally unacceptable and I call on people to be vigilant, be each others eyes and ears and particularly look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours. Any one with any information on these or any anti-community activities in Limavady should pass it on to the relevant authorities so that these individuals can be apprehended."
