LIMAVADY High School has announced that the new Principal will be Mr Shane Laverty, the current headmaster of Coleraine College. His appointment was made last week and we spoke to the man who will replace Mr David Dunlop, who is retiring as the Head of Limavady High.
Mr Laverty said: "I am absolutely delighted to be coming to Limavady High. I come from a High School background myself - I was a pupil of Ballycastle High and I also come from one of the oldest learning partnerships in the country, the partnership between Ballycastle High and Cross and Passion.
“I know the Limavady Learning Partnership is one of the finest examples of shared learning and I am very much looking forward to be part of that.
“I know Limavady High is passionate about openness and inclusion. I felt the sense of tradition when I walked into the school for the first time and I am delighted I am going to be a part of it."
Mr Laverty is a native of Ballycastle. He attended Ballycastle High School before moving to third level education at Stranmillis College, Belfast where he completed his teaching degree in PE and Geography, and later obtained his MA and PQH (NI).
A keen sportsman, Mr Laverty played hockey for both Ballycastle, North Down and Portrush Clubs.
Mr Laverty's first teaching post was in Scrabo High School in Newtownards where he worked for two years, before gaining invaluable experience in the special school sector in Dunfane Special School in Ballymena. He then moved to Markethill High School in County Armagh.
At Markethill High School, he progressed to Acting Vice Principal, before moving to Aughnacloy and Newry Schools where he had Vice Principal roles.
In 2009 he was appointed Principal of Coleraine College. It is understood he will remain at the College until after Easter (April), when he will take up position as the Head of Limavady High School.
Mr Laverty is 50 years old, lives in Portstewart and has four children, aged 24 and triplets aged 22.
