THIS week's announcement that the Irish Open will be staged at Royal Portrush has been warmly welcomed by the local community, with a local hotel saying it is already taking bookings for the weekend. The European Tour confirmed on Friday that the Irish Open tournament will take place at Portrush from 28 June to 1 July 2012, the first time since 1947.
Political representatives in Limavady have said they expect a major boost for the tourism and business sectors across the North Coast and in the Roe Valley due to the thousands of international visitors the major sporting tournament will bring.
Expressing his delight at the announcement, the Mayor of Limavady, Cllr Sean McGlinchey said he hoped the Roe Valley would experience a major boost in tourism and that visitors to the tournament would avail of local hotels, shops and restaurants. He added: "Its great news for the whole of the North Coast and I hope that Limavady can enjoy many of the spin offs."
His hopes were echoed by the Director of Development at Limavady Borough Council, Valerie Richmond, who said: "Great opportunities exist now for council, our local businesses and tourism providers to attract many of these visitors to Limavady, both during 2012 and in the future. Council is delighted that the hard work by various organisations to bring this prestigious tournament to Portrush exceeded expectations. Council now looks forward to a successful event and prosperous tourism season for all."
