Arsonists strike again

Thursday, 12 June 2008

TWO more homes in Limavady were targeted by arsonists at the weekend.
The first incident happened at Thiepval Court shortly before 2am on Saturday June 7.
A shed was set on fire causing damage to it and to two rear windows of a house.
Some 30 minutes later, at about 2.30am, wheelie bins were placed against the door of a house at Josephine Avenue and set alight, causing damage to a kitchen window.
At home at the time was 81-year-old man Frank Tierney along with his wife and son, who all escaped without injury.
It is understood that the attackers also attempted to set fire to an oil tank, but the alarm was raised by a passing police patrol.
Said Mr Tierney: "We knew nothing until the police arrived. It upset us very much that somebody could come along with such evil ideas in their heads to destroy people's property and lives."
Limavady's new Mayor, Brenda Chivers, said those responsible "could have had murder on their hands".
She added: "These people just don't seem to realise what could happen. I am appealing for them to stop it.
“These people have been extremely lucky - there could have been a loss of life," she said.
Limavady's Deputy Mayor, Alderman George Robinson MLA, has slammed those responable as "dangerous individuals".
