Limavady man Kieran McDonald who died following a karting accident in Kilrea.
THE family of a Limavady man who died following a go kart accident are demanding answers regarding his death. Kieran McDonald, a 28-year-old butcher from the town, died following the accident at a go karting track in Kilrea on July 10. The father of three had gone to the GoProkart track with work colleagues from WD Meats, Coleraine, just before the Twelfth of July holidays, when the tragedy occurred.
His devastated fiancee, Linda Mullan told the Northern Constitution that no one has officially come to tell her what happened on the day that Kieran died and that she wants steps taken to ensure that a similar tragedy does not happen again.
She said: "Kieran had really been looking forward to getting a day away with his work mates. I've been told that he lost control of the go-kart and it went off the tracks and hit a jeep. Efforts were made to bring him round but I'm told that he died instantly. Paramedics were called to the scene but unfortunately Kieran had already passed away."
The young mum now faces the prospect of bringing up their three children, aged 8, 2 and 6 months alone: "They know their daddy is in heaven now. Recently, when we were looking at photographs of Kieran, I asked them where daddy was and they pointed to the sky. We are all just devastated that he is no longer with us."
She continued: "I want to know what happened on the day that Kieran passed away and I want assurances that this will never happen again. This needs to be fully investigated. I would never want any family to go through what Kieran's family and I are going through at the minute. It's heartbreaking."
Kieran, a member of Edenmore Flute Band for the past 20 years, was laid to rest at Drumachose Presbyterian Church last Tuesday, where members of the band performed a guard of honour.
His brother Jason, also a member of the band, said that his presence would be sorely missed: "Kieran was very well thought of in the band; he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was very musically gifted and could play both the flute and the drum. Not only will he be sorely missed by his family but also the members, friends and associates of Edenmore Band."
