Limavady Council launches appeal for Haiti disaster
Thursday, 28 January 2010
The Deputy Mayor of Limavady Alderman George Robinson and Roe Valley Leisure Centre staff members Glen Rankin and Janet Butcher are pictured launching the Limavady Borough Council ‘Haiti’ appeal in the Roe Valley Leisure Centre.
LIMAVADY Mayor Cathal Ó hOisín and George Robinson, Deputy Mayor, have launched the council's appeal to aid the victims of the devastating earthquake which tore through Haiti on Tuesday January 12.
For the appeal, blue recycle bins will be placed at both the reception of the council offices and at the Roe Valley Leisure Centre for people to place monetary donations.
The bins will stay in place for the next few weeks and everyone, staff and public alike, are urged to give generously to help this valuable cause.
The Mayor urged the borough to get behind the appeal. He said: "The catastrophe which struck Haiti was one of epic proportions, and one all of us hope to witness only once in our lifetimes.
“I would urge everyone to dig deep and give what they can afford to this worthy cause.
“At this time of economic difficulty, I appreciate we are all watching what we spend but even just a few pounds will make a big difference to the lives of those affected.
“I am proud to be launching this appeal, along with the help and support of the Deputy Mayor, and I know the Limavady Borough will embrace it as much as I have and donate generously."
Deputy Mayor George Robinson echoed this view saying: "I cannot stress how important it is that we as a borough all get behind and truly embrace this Haiti appeal. Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed, injured and left homeless, so we as humanitarians have a duty to do all we can to somewhat alleviate this suffering.
