LIMAVADY is from the Irish 'Léim an Mhadaidh', The Dog's Leap.
This year, the language which gave the town its name is about to take another huge leap with the founding of Gaelscoil Léim an Mhadaidh, the town's new Irish-medium primary school in September 2010.
A Development Proposal for the new school was submitted in October to the Department of Education and funding body InaG (The Irish-medium School's Trust Fund) has already committed funds towards the longer term capital needs of the school.
The new school in Limavady will be one of almost 40 primary schools in the Province providing education through Irish. Other areas in which development proposals have been submitted include, Ballymena, Kilkeel and Cookstown.
“It is an exciting time for the committee and parents," said Gaelscoil Léim an Mhadaidh committee member Lee Devine. "The opening of our school will bring the number of Irish-medium primary schools in the County to eight. This will mean that our community will have the same opportunities that are currently being afforded to children and families in Maghera, Magherafelt, Ballinascreen, Dungiven, as well as three schools within the Derry City.
“We are really excited about the new school and are committed to education towards the highest levels in oral and written fluency both in Irish and English, as well as an education with a strong emphasis of academic and personal skills. Gaelscoil Léim an Mhadaidh offers a new exciting prospect for the future of our children and we are looking forward to the opening with great anticipation."
